I went to U.C.L.A. School of Law, class of June 1970. There was a lot going on at the time: Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were both assassinated; the Viet Nam war was raging; squadrons of police officers and National Guard troops were frequent visitors to college campuses. People were getting busted for smoking marijuana, a substance many of us preferred to alcohol. Blacks and Hispanics were demanding to be treated fairly. Women's Liberation was gaining philosophical support. Alternative lifestyles were being explored; etc.

In short, it was a time when "personal freedom" was something a lot of people were not only talking about but attempting to live as well.

What did it mean to be a free individual in a nation which called itself "the land of the free"?

We all had heard the words free and freedom used a lot as we grew up. But it became clear that it is one thing to be told you are free; quite another to understand what that truly means. This was relevant then; it is relevant now. It is always relevant.

Our nation has roots. It has foundational documents which talk about this stuff and set forth the bottom line rules. The documents define of the individual as well as the role of legitimate government in that individual's life. They establish the relationship between the government and the people - the rules government is bound to abide by. We all need to be familiar with this important material.

The documents I am referring to are the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights - the heart and soul of our system.

The majority of the material you will find on this site is my attempt to communicate the spirit of freedom as expressed through these wonderful documents. It is my hope that you will be turned on to the wonder of the possibilities. Most of this is presented with lots of cartoons and, hopefully, humor. You might begin by reading the article "It's About Freedom". It will give you an idea of my point of view.
